So, my categories are above my title on my blog pages – and I don't like the way that looks.
Here is one square of the masonary grid style blog I have and you can see how all those categories are showing above my title.
Some of these posts belong in different categories – but I don't need to show all that above my title on every post. I don't like the way that looks.
So I am going to remove the categories completely.
This is super advanced stuff.
Definitely not for everyone.
Every theme is different – so you have to be able to read some code and tell what is doing what in the theme editor — or don't do it at all if you are not confident you can get yourself out of trouble should anything go wrong.
Make sure you have a recent back up of your site, just in case something does go wrong.
Ok. You have been warned!
Here is a video of me doing this edit.
This post is advanced!
You don't have to be able to customize WordPress to write a website!
Most of the time, writing on a WordPress website is as easy as writing an email.
Tools I Use in this Video
Camstudio – free to use to make videos – to record the video.
CAD microphone – better sound than my computer microphone (for video recording)
Page Inspector – free tool from Mozilla Firefox Web Developer tools
If you want to learn more about the Firefox web developer tools – please follow the above links and do some reading – you can also search Google and Youtube for tutorials.
This is advanced stuff and if you are into it – you will love what Firefox has to offer for web developers and WordPress bloggers who like to customize their themes!
I am completely self-taught – and there is plenty of free training on the Internet – use your favorite search engine and type in whatever you are needing help with.
FileZilla – FTP client – also free to use and must be downloaded in order to use it.

Backup, Backup, Backup
Make sure your host does backups – or you have done a recent backup of your entire site – especially if you are doing any edits in the WordPress editor – if you get the dreaded white screen of death – which I like to call what happens to WordPress when something is wrong – you either need to upload what you have backed up or ask your Site Support to help!
This is not something to take lightly. I'm serious. Back up.
If you have FTP access – you can backup your site to your computer. I would also do an export of the WordPress back up.
In the WordPress dashboard go to “Tools” –> Export
On that page, “All content” should be chosen.
Click on “Download Export File” and save that somewhere on your computer.
If anything happens – you have a backup!
Remove Categories Above Title
First – why would I want to remove the categories?
It looks better. 🙂
Do you agree?
Some might ask if I am messing with search engine results by removing the categories here in the blog / category pages.
No, because it does not remove the post FROM the category – don't think it will cause a problem in the search engines.
Only time will tell!
I would rather do something because it helps viewers have a better experience on my web site than do something for search results. Although getting found in the search engines is definitely nice too! I don't think this quick fix will negatively affect anything.
I'd love to hear your comments on this advanced WordPress Tutorial!
